About HiLex test

HiLex is an acronym for the 'Hindi Lexical Proficiency Test'. It's a tool designed for cognitive researchers who want to study participants with Hindi as either their native or non-native language in an experimental setting. It uses a self-paced visual lexical decision task to estimate an individual's Hindi vocabulary. By taking the test, participants can obtain an estimate of their Hindi vocabulary in just 5 minutes.
Over the years, several such tests have been created in multiple langauges, for instance, there's LexTALE for English, LEXTALE_FR for French, Lextale-Esp for Spanish, LEXTALE_CH for Chinese, LexITA for Italian, and Lexize for Finnish, and many more. However, there's a lack of similar tests for Hindi and other Indian languages. This shows the need to make reliable tests to measure word knowledge in these languages, which can help understand language better and support people learning these languages. In this study, we introduce HiLex, a tool to quickly and objectively assess Hindi word knowledge.

How was it developed ?
The HiLex was developed using series of studies, involving item-selection study and validation studies. For more details please refer to: ____

Quick and Easy
On average, the HiLex takes about 5 mins. to complete. It comprises only 90 items, making it a practically feasible addition to any psycholinguistic experiment.

Open Science
We invite everybody to use the HiLex for their research purposes. It is free to run on web, with scores accessible on a mouse click. It is made using open-source tools like jsPsych, SQLite, Node.js.

Valid
HiLex was evaluated using multiple linguistic tasks (reading comprehension, spelling, word meaning etc.) to assess its validity for proficiency.

Scoring
Researchers get access to multiple scores: like HiLex scores, normalized scores, hits and false alarms, including reaction times for their participants.
